External bias resistor selection on PXIe-4302 with TB-4302C

Hi,

  • I'm trying to measure 4-20mA current loops from 15 PR9113B 2-channel transmitters (so 30 channels total) using the TB-4302C terminal board connected to an PXIe-4302 DAQ card.
  • Here is a PDF schematic [Dropbox link] of my planned setup (showing only 3 of the 30 channels for simplicity)
  • The transmitters are isolated and so as per Table 1 in the NI document "Field Wiring and Noise Consideration for Analog Signals" I believe I need to insert an external bias resistor between AISENS and AIGND.
  • The PR9113B is listed as having a load of <600ohms, which I will assume = 600ohms.
  • Page 2-2 of the PXIe-4302 user manual recommends an external bias resistor of Rbias = load_resistance*100 = 60kohms

QUESTIONS:

  • Since I have multiple transmitters using the same external bias resistor, does that affect the resistance of the bias resistor that I need?
  • How do I determine the maximum power through the resistor?  Is it negligible?  Or is the worst-case the full 23mA  going through the resistor, Power = I^2*R?  Or something else?

Any other comments on my proposed setup are welcome, I'm very new to 4-20mA current loops.

Thanks!

DMM 2535 Handshaking one scan multiple sample not working; V ok, R nok

Hey,

I'm using the DMM Switch handshaking example. It works as is, but:

1. keeping V measurement; changing continuous scan to FALSE; changing sample amount from 5 to 1; adding MUX leaving running state to continue to FETCH DMM; FETCH DMM with accumulated backlog.
STILL WORKS, BUT V values are wrong! 5.6V i.s.o. 0V !!

2. Corrected to work with:

- back to continuous scan (because single scan doesn't work (hangs in the mist somewhere) when more than 1 sample/trigger asked)

- multiple samples (e.g. 5) per trigger

NOW MEASURING CORRECT 0V

3. I want to measure R

DOESN'T WORK !! ALWAYS NaN i.s.o. e.g. 450 Ohm.

PXIe-1085 Slot Power Constraint

Hello,

We are configuring a NI-STS T1 using the PXIe 1085 chassis. We have decided to use the PXIe-4113 Power Supply. We noticed that the per slot capability of the PXIe1085 is 38.25W (pg 46 of the Specifications, screenshot attached), whereas the 4113 delivers 60W per channel. How is it possible to use the 4113 in the 1085? Please clarify on this. What sort of precautions need to be taken in such a case?

(Attached : Screenshot of the PXIe-1085 Specification)

Thanks in advance for the help!

PXIe-8135 unexpected ethernet port swap

Hi,

I have a number of PXIe-8135 controllers configured with a static IP address on port 1, with port 2 disabled. Every once in a while, after a power outage, a random controller restarts with port 2 as primary and configured with the static IP address that had been assigned to port 1. At that point it is necessary to use NI-MAX to manually reconfigure the ports in order to restore the original setup. How can this be prevented?

Application Development Environments for PXI-7953R

Hi,

I am looking out what is the necessary driver needed in order have run an developed *.lvbitx file on the PXI-7953R board.  In search of the FlexRIO driver, the following is the list.  Anyhow, I am not in the real time environment, so I want to ask if I am in trouble now?  From the list of the Application Development, I only have LabView 2015 SP1 installed.

Application Development Environments (ADEs)

Note: You should install ADEs before installing FlexRIO Support 16.0. To add support for ADEs installed after installing FlexRIO Support 16.0, modify your FlexRIO 16.0 installation or launch the FlexRIO 16.0 installer again.

  • LabVIEW 2013 SP1 (32-bit and 64-bit), 2014 SP1 (32-bit and 64-bit), 2015 SP1 (32-bit and 64-bit), and 2016
  • LabVIEW Real-Time Module 2013 SP1, 2014 SP1, 2015 SP1, and 2016
  • LabVIEW FPGA Module 2013 SP1, 2014 SP1, 2015 SP1, and 2016

And also, when I look into the NI Example, I found an example, "Simple External Memory FIFO", but when I opened up the project, error message is prompt saying "The plug-in for the selected item is not installed on your system or the plug-in has an expired license. Please contact National Instruments".  What am I missing?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks.

Peggy

Access to PXI-6682H TCXO 10 MHz oscillator signal

Hello, I am trying to access the TCXO oscillator signal of my PXI-6682H card by routing it to clkout.  I am able to connect the "Oscillator" to clkout, but it does not appear to be disciplined to GPS.

I have a separate Trimble Thunderbolt generating a 10 MHz signal, and when I view them on an oscilloscope, it's clear that the two are not sync'd.  A 1 MHz clock I generate on PFI2, is synchronized to the Trimble Thunderbolt's 10 MHz output.

This page PXI_CLK10 Disciplining and Synchronization to a Time Reference Across Multiple PXIe Chassis describes the ability to route the TCXO oscillator signal out of CLKOUT for a 6683H, and implies that this oscillator signal is disciplined by my selected Time Reference.  Does this also apply for a PXI-6682H?

Demonstration VI attached.  When I ran this code on a PXI-6683H, it did produce a GPS-disciplined oscillator signal.  Is the behavior for the PXI-6682H expected?

Thanks,

Greg

Calibrating PXIe-4353 using CAL-4353 and a temperature calibrator (Martel PTC-8010)

Hello,

I am trying to calibrate PXIe-4353 modules. It is currently being used to read temperature values from thermocouples (J-Type).

In the calibration guide for PXIe-4353, it is mentioned that a calibrating accessory CAL-4353 is required to change the calibration values of PXIe-4353 and the method mentioned is to use a voltage/resistance calibrator to send in reference voltage and a reference resistance to the CAL-4353 connected to PXIe-4353 and verify and , if required , change the the calibration constants.

We currently do not have a voltage/resistance calibrator but instead have a temperature calibrator (Martel PTC-8010). The input reference temperature from the PTC-8010 goes through the PXIe-4353 can be read in the system.

Is there a method to calibrate/adjust the calibration constants of PXIe-4353 with just the temperature reference.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards Smiley Happy

Transporting PXI rack in Pelican Case with foam. Is ESD and issue?

Hi,

I have a PXIe-1082 chassis, with an PXIe-8108 embedded controller which controls a PXIe-6363 (X Series DAQ multi-IO), PXI-4071 (DMM),  PXI-2530b switch matrix,  PXI-4110 (power supply).

I need to transport this guy on a regular basis.   I think the pelican line of cases (www.pelican.com) are quite suitable.  My question is in regard to the foam.   The default foam provided is not conductive and so ESD is not prevented.   Will the NI system described handle this, or do I need to protect the whole unit from ESD?   What have others done?

The picture shows the chassis (with all the cards on the left) the other pockets are for adapters and cabling

Hi,

I have a PXIe-1085 chassis connected to a Dell Precision T3600 via a PXIe-8381 MXI link and i am only able to see the PXIe-8381 in MAX.

I have tried a number of things based on other posts in this forum, but nothing has worked so far.

This is what i have tried;

  • Installed Feb 2016 device drivers
  • Run the relevant NI update services
  • Updated PC BIOS to latest version
  • Removed all modules from the chassis

So i currently have an empty chassis, except the PXIe-8381 card, connected to my PC, but i can't see it in MAX!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

I have a PXI system which contains module 8821 (embedded controller) and 4138 SMU. The PXI system has been changed to boot with Windows. I was able to remote desktop to the PXI system and develop some working SMU codes on it.

I would like to use this system as a device which is to be connected to a host PC.

What would be the best way to go about it? Thank you

PXIe-5450 error messages - Error (-239101) and Error (-239100)

Hi!

Our PXIe-5450 is giving us a couple of error messages.  The error codes are -239101 and -239100.  The first says "Internal Hardware Error occurred in MiG Hardware".  The second one says "error at niFgen Initiate generation".

This is PXIe-5450 is housed in a PXIe-1075 chassis, together with another PXIe-5450.  Both are managed by a PXIe-8130 (also housed in the same chassis).  The second 5450 is not giving any problem and working fine.

Any suggestions on what the problem is and how to solve this?  Thanks!

PXIe-1085 Chassis power consumption

Hi,

We are designing our STS with T1 configuration. I have many questions on the maximum power deliverable per each peripheral slot of PXIe-1085.

1. What is the maximum power system slot consumes when all the slots in the chassis are populated?

2. We have 2 SMUs, 5 power supplies and 10 digital cards, are there any limitations to allocate slots?

3. Is the max power deliverable calculated on slot basis or whole chassis?

4. Please explain the attached figure, and how it affects slot allocation.

Thanks & Regards,

Alekhya

Testing Simple Matrix for Shorts/Opens

$

My NI support contract expired, so I was hoping someone could do a sanity check on a pretty simple system I've layed out before I renew it and go to a FAE. It's been awhile since I dabbled in this stuff.

I have an application where I want to test, say, a 5x5 matrix of electrical conductors for opens and shorts. My idea is to drive a voltage (say, 10V) on the first conductor in the X dimension. Then, check each additional X conductor using a DMM to check for 0V (no shorts). Then, I want to check each Y conductor to verify they are getting 10V (no opens). I'll then step through driving 10V on each additional X conductor, verifying no shorts to the other X conductors.

I'll then swap the process around: drive the first conductor in the Y dimension, check for 10V at the other Y conductors to detect shorts. If my testing above passed, I'll already know I don't have any opens in the Y dimension, so I can stop there.

I've done a crude layout in Word using some PXI components that I think will get the job done. The PXI-2527 would run in two-wire mode (it would actually give me 16 channels, so technically I suppose I could hook both the X and Y conductors to it, but my actual matrix is much larger, so disregard for now).

Any thoughts, corrections, or simplifications are welcome.

AO Grounds on a PXIe-6739

I'm currently working on interfacing some custom hardware to an NI PXIe-6739, and I was hoping to develop a better understanding of how the grounds on the card are referenced to each other. From what I can tell, the grounds are all connected, as there is a common AO GND pin, as well as the dedicated ground pins for each AO bank. My question is whether the dedicated ground pins are connected via a plane, or if they are connected via traces? I've done some research on both the 6739 datasheet and the user manual and I haven't found anything, however I could have missed something as the user manual is a pretty large document. Thanks in advance.

PXIe-1085, AWG (PXI-4461) waveform turns off when DMM (PXI-4070) takes a reading

$

I saw this issue while developing code. The device I'm testing has a fan controller that outputs a pwm signal and expects a tach signal back that looks like a square wave. I send a command to the fan controller to turn on, and then using the PXI-4461 as an AWG, I supply a slow square wave so that the fan controller locks on and doesn't change it's pwm duty cycle. I then measure the duty cycle multiple times over a second to make sure it is locked on. This test worked just fine until I went to work on a different rack with a different configuration. The only difference was the 4461 and 4070 were right next to each other on the same bus in the PXIe-1085 chassis.

My question is, can instruments reset other instruments if they are on the same bus?

PXIe-8840 with 16GB RAM Installed

PXIe-8840 officially supports only 8GB RAM, however, 16GB modules are now available such as the Crucial CT204864BF160B for instance. Can somebody confirm that PXIe-8840 can run reliably with 16GB module installed? If, yes then can you please share the module type?

Thank you,

PXIe 4353 calibration session

In the manual, the step asks us to open a DAQmx calibration session on your device.

I am unsure how this is done..

The next step is to  Call the DAQmx Connect SC Express Calibration Accessory Channels VI. Configure the CAL-4353 by setting the connection to _tc_calibration and the physical channels to Dev1/ai0:31.

is this done in LabVIEW or in NI MAX?

could anyone help me out with this.

Thanks in advance.

PXIe-1082DC Fan Filter Kit

Hi,

The user manual of my PXIe-1082DC states that I should clean the fan filter located in the filter retainer at the back of the PXI . I checked the back of the PXI and found the air filter retainer empty . I was wondering if a fan filter should have been included  with the PXIe chassis  or if they are  purchased separately.

Thanks for your help.
